Coming Up Aces

I have heard of them, I have seen them on television, a lot of them in cartoons.  Just about, everyone that I know that plays golf wants one, or has lied about getting one.
Professional poker players pray for all cards to be “Coming up Aces”.  The average golfer just really dreams of this, a Hole in One.  For the pro’s it not an everyday occurrence but it does happen.

On the Champion tour, 2011 six pro golfers were coming up aces; Let’s take a look at who is holding all the aces in that hand:

  • ·         Olin Brown round 1 at the Allianz Championship on hole # 8
  • ·         D.A. Weifbring, round 2 at the U.S. Senior Open Championship on hole #3
  • ·         Jay Haas, round 1 at the 3M Championship on hole #4
  • ·         Hale Irwin, round 1 at the Boeing Classic on hole #9
  • ·         Chien Soon Lu, round 2 at the Songdo IBD Championship on hole #17
  • ·         Mark Wiebe, round 2 at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship on hole #3

Of course, there must be someone out there that has done the impossible (not me) and hit the ultimate Hole in One.  On the other hand, is it only the pro’s that does those things?  Seems so farfetched that anyone could do it, pro or not.  Is it just 100% pure luck or can they do it more than once????????????

Well on the Nationwide Tour of 2011 25 lucky or skilled pro’s were also Coming Up Aces, to many to mention by name but let us look at the first five or so:

  • ·         Ryan Amour, round 2 at the Panama Claro Championship on hole # 8
  • ·         Carl Paulson, round 1 at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open on hole # 3
  • ·         Andrew Svobada, round 2 at the Chitimacha Louisiana Open on hole #8
  • ·         Ken Duke, round 1 at the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae on hole #6
  • ·         Matt Davidson, round 3 at the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae on hole #6

Wow they really do hit them, only a dream for me, I do not think that I have ever saw a hole in one at a live outing only on TV a mostly in movies or cartoons.  I miss all the great shots all the time.  Not quite the same on replay as it is live at the moment and the look and noise of the crowd.

Went looking for some stats on how many aces in one round I seem to have found a lot of doubt.  One report says this one says that.  Well I think that the truth is there are just too many golf courses out there to keep anything like that to be very accurate, maybe by countries, which will be for another blog.

Here are some odds for Coming Up Aces-A study from The Golf Digest:

  • ·         One player making two aces in the same round 67 million to 1
  • ·         Average player on a 200 yd hole acing it is 150,000 to 1
  • ·         Low-handicap making an hole in one is 5000 to 1
  • ·         Tour player making an hole in one is 3000 to 1

I guess that answers the question luck or skill, sounds a lot like luck, not everyone can come Up Aces on the golf course.  Most players never do.  The only way to make that all in one, hole in one Coming Up Aces is to hit the links and practice.  If you hit that ball towards the hole enough it is bound to go in once, right?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
